About Rebel & Roots Co

What we wear has always meant more than what we put on in the morning.

Clothing has been used to belong, to rebel, to conform, to protest and to say something about ourselves without having to say anything at all.

Rebel & Roots grew from an interest in that space — in the words, symbols and ideas we carry with us, and what happens when we choose to make them visible.

The designs are rooted in progressive beliefs, feminism, equality and resistance, but also in something else: the belief that showing what matters to us can help us recognise one another — and remind someone else that they are not alone.

Some designs say it loudly, others are more subtle, but all carry meaning at their core.

THE IDEAS BEHIND THE DESIGNS

Ideas come from all sorts of places. I love nature and what we can learn from it, especially when that connects with something happening in the world. Other ideas might begin with a piece of history, a phrase that stays with me, or just something that makes me stop and look a little closer.

Thoughts & Observations is often where I explore the thinking behind these designs, a place to go a little deeper into something I've noticed, wondered about or been inspired by.

WHY THE NAME REBEL & ROOTS CO.

There is something in the balance of these two words that has always felt important to me.

To rebel is to be willing to question, to challenge what doesn't feel right, and to imagine that things could be different. There is passion and energy in rebellion.

To have roots is to know what grounds us, the people, places, ideas and values we carry. There is a quiet strength in being rooted.

Roots without questioning can keep us tied to the way things have always been. Rebellion without roots can lose sight of what we're fighting for.

Rebel & Roots Co. celebrates both sides of ourselves, grounded in what matters, while still willing to question what could change.
